New Username Symbols by Heidi, journal
New Username Symbols
As part of our ongoing process to make the user experience cleaner and more intuitive, we've launched a new set of username symbols designed to help easily identify deviant-types.
Easily Identifiable
At a glance, the new symbols are quickly recognizable. When hovering over a username symbol, a tooltip appears, providing a brief explanation of that user's deviant-type. If clicked, a modal appears, giving a brief explanation for each username symbol, with "Learn more" links that lead to more detailed explanations.
A word from Heidi:
Over the years, a few things have come to seem like deviantART mainstays. Deviant green, intricate art categori
I've always disliked the term "talented".
It implies that things come to you naturally and without any effort, while in reality the people that are considered extremely talented rarely get to the top without any practice. And the 'rarely' is an understatement. I've never seen anyone reach the top without effort. Not ever. I dislike how 'not having talent' is often used as an excuse for not being good at something, while in reality the only real reason that keeps people from accomplishing things is not working hard enough for it. And sure, not working hard enough can have its reasons. Very valid reasons like having different priority's in lif
How to Help a Friend
While I focus on friends with Mary Sues, most of this advice also applies to family members, art idols, and strangers.
Have you ever picked up a new story, feeling good about its potential to lift you up and alleviate your boredom, only to find that it houses a dreaded Mary Sue?
You stare at the piece of paper. Now what? You aren't pond scum, so you know better than to type "ur chara is a mary sue, u suck, go die in a hole." But what do you say? On the one hand, you don't want to hurt the writer's feelings, or turn them off of writing forever. But on the other, you feel that you have to say something...

DARE MY CHARACTERS? (fun drawing prompts!) by alpacasovereign, journal
DARE MY CHARACTERS? (fun drawing prompts!)
ILL TRY AND DRAW EVERY ONE I GET.. they will likely be dumb chibis or if it's something i'm really into i'll try and go all out LOL
i only won't draw anything that the char wouldn't do, i'm not rly into ooc but maybe i will? it just sorta... depends on the dare!!
RULES AND STUFF:
-Characters can refuse or accept Dares
- If characters refuse the dare they have to answer a question of your choice (basically a Truth)
- Dares can be anything, as ridiculous as you want them
- Characters from different storylines/timelines CAN interact with each other
- You can send more than one Dare
- You can send a Dare through a note and I will make it
LINE WEIGHT III art show at Gallery Nucleus! by shoomlah, journal
LINE WEIGHT III art show at Gallery Nucleus!
I'm nothing if not terrible about telling you folks about things at the last minute, right? So let's not break tradition- I'm going to be heading down to LA this weekend for the Line Weight III show at Nucleus Gallery! This is a show dedicated entirely to traditional linework- I rarely get to sell originals, let alone six of them, so I'm pretty excited. Additional details:
Just take a moment to stare at that flyer and look at what good company I'm in, I'll wait. I KNOW RIGHT? It's daunting. I'm flattered. I love all these guys.I'll also be doing a LIVE DEMO at the gallery during the opening on Saturday, which I am not at all terrified
Should You Become a Professional Artist? by leiyue, journal
Should You Become a Professional Artist?
Community Week
Do you enjoy art passionately and are considering doing it as your job, but have some worries such as;
 Will I enjoy it as much as a job?
 Will it be hard getting a job?
 Will I become a starving artist?
If you're like me, you're asking yourself those questions and are letting them give you a hard time deciding whether or not to pursue art professionally. My health teacher told me, as we digressed from our topic of smoking, that to know whether or not you want to do a job, you have to hear what it's like from someone who's already doing it. That's why I decided to do an interview wit
Harry Potter, you are my lifeblood by RobynRose, journal
Harry Potter, you are my lifeblood
Every time I think I can finally break my connection to the universe, those Harry Potter Christmas marathons suck me right back in with powerful feelings of wonderment. I want to write fanfiction again. Badly. I want to write about wizard colleges in North America and nextgen children! And underdeveloped characters! and Hufflepuff / Ravenclaw points of view! I've already started pre-plotting something a little long involving Draco slowly, agonizingly coming to terms with his past, and Hermione going off to Wizard university! Feeling super inspired.
Oh, Potterverse, you suck me back in every time!
EDIT: As I said above, I like Draco Malfoy.
i have a lot to say about this logo by alpacasovereign, journal
i have a lot to say about this logo
but it'd be lengthy so i'm just gonna say if it's being read as something that isn't what it's intended, like, the no equality sign, a z, a math symbol: it's a failure as a logo
the end
A new year started. So some words of inspiration for those that want to pursue art this year...
:bulletblack: Don't worry about your age. Do not get discouraged by those that are younger than you and better. Some people start art when they are 6 years old and are prodigy's at age 16, others make a rather late or slow start. It doesn't matter if you're 10 or 80 years old. You're never too old to learn something new, and you're never too old to do something you enjoy.
:bulletblack: Everybody has potential. Even the greatest masters in art started out as beginners. It just takes a lot of time and persistence.
:bulletblack: Don't be afraid to
As many of you know I am currently enrolled in a private art college and am going through the paces, however I'm really struggling with keeping/creating my own style and yet conforming to the guide lines of my courses. I'm currently in the foundation classes so they are more rigid with traditional rules, meaning clean and realistic illustrations. No problem for me there but recently I was asked to make an illustration for a scholarship and I froze. Sure my portfolio looks great, it's full of traditional realistic pieces.... but my preferred style is messy chaos and anime non-sense. It's not something the art world here in the US smiles upon.
